Luther Burbank was an American botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. His developments included the Shasta daisy, freestone peach, and russet Burbank potato, which became the primary potato used in food processing worldwide. This potato was invented to help with the devastating situation in Ireland following the Great Famine as it is resistant to late blight.
