Stone Harbor Plate

$67.00

Stylized sandpipers are congregating on this plate, as they do at the beach in Stone Harbor, New Jersey and many other beaches on the east coast. The triangular plate can serve multiple uses—as a cheese board, appetizer plate, pastry tray or a decorative accent. It was hand painted in the centuries-old majolica tradition using white, yellow, brick and gray glaze.

Height: 10”
Width: 10”

A common beach bird, sandpipers tend to move together on the ground in flocks. They’re very entertaining as they run back and forth near the water’s edge. The Delaware Bay is their most important spring migratory stopover, where they arrive in May to feed on millions of horseshoe crab eggs. Unfortunately, the overfishing of horseshoe crabs for bait and biomedical research has reduced their food supply and caused a drop in population. New Jersey has recently instituted new regulations to better control horseshoe crab fishing.
