Newt Jar
Fired in a pit firing, the peach, white and black colorations on this container are completely random, determined by the interaction of flames with organic material in the pit. A small newt sits on top, acting as a handle for the lid. The jar has been treated to be waterproof and food safe, so could serve as a sugar bowl, salt urn or nut jar. It could also be used as a fun way to hold cotton balls or office supplies.
Top Diameter: 4”
Bottom Diameter: 3-3/8”
Height: 4-1/2” with lid/newt, 2-1/4” base only
Newts play an important ecological role in freshwater and woodland habitats, and are indicators of healthy wetlands and forests. They control populations of aquatic insects, especially mosquitos. The numbers of many species of newts are declining rapidly due to habitat loss and water pollution. Some are now legally protected in order to safeguard what’s left of their habitats. An interesting fact about newts is that they can lose their legs or tails and grow them back via regeneration.
