Dragonfly Plate
Two graceful dragonflies flit around some cattails on this rectangular tray. The glaze was hand painted in the centuries-old majolica style from Spain. It could be used for food (perhaps crackers and cheese), toiletries or as a decorative accent in almost any room.
Length: 9-3/4”
Width: 6”
Depth: 3/4”
Dragonflies are important to their environments both as predators (particularly of mosquitos) and as prey for birds and fish. However, about 16% of the 7000 species are at risk of extinction. The main threats are human destruction of their wetland habitats, water pollution and rising temperatures. Dragonflies are cold blooded, so can’t regulate their body temperatures like mammals and birds. A rise in their body temperature can damage wing tissues and even cause death from overheating. Because they require stable oxygen levels and clean water, scientists consider them reliable bioindicators of the health of an ecosystem.
